I am having a blast DJing at virtual dance parties for people with disabilities.
Catholic Charities Disability Services & Ministries helps people with a variety of disabilities. Before the pandemic, one of their popular services were monthly in-person dance parties, which allowed everyone to have fun together. Director Marilyn Scott did not want the pandemic to isolate her clients. She reached out to me and we developed a way that could easily bring people together in a fun and safe way – virtual dance parties on Zoom! I was happy to provide my expertise and services for these events.
During these private virtual dance parties, people get to see their friends, hear their favorite songs, exercise and move and groove to the beat of the music in their own special way. I could tell by their faces and the things that they said that this was a welcome break and a chance to let loose. Together, they brought the party to life! As the DJ and emcee, I helped to maintain the energy level by playing their favorite songs and led them in ‘do as I do’ dances. I gently guided the interaction by inviting attendees to participate in any way they could. For example, I’d invite people in wheelchairs to dance with their arms or sway their head back and forth and smile. This is a great way to feel included and involved. We also sang happy birthday for everyone celebrating that particular month.
I know we are all trying to reimagine our social events to be safe during the pandemic. Would you like Kris Koch Music to play energizing music and create fun at your virtual or in person dance party? Feel free to email me at kris@kriskochmusic.com to brainstorm options and to reserve your date.
